Hide it, Lock it, Take it

The Lima Police Department reminds you to "Hide it, Lock it, Take it."

During the Christmas shopping season, we see an increased amount of thefts from vehicles.  These thefts happen throughout the year, but are more prevelant this time of year.

You work hard for the money to buy gifts and to have nice things.  Protect your belongings by following some basic safety precautions.

HIDE:
If you must leave valuables in your vehicle while you are shopping, or at any other time, a best practice is to place the items in the trunk.  Do not leave GPS devices, phones, iPods, or other electronics attached to your dash, or windshield.  Power cords running out of your power outlets and into the console or glove box, also do little to conceal your electronics.  Do not leave your purse, laptop, iPads, or anything of value laying on the seats.  These are like neon signs for thieves and invite them to ruin your day.

LOCK:
Once you have secured your valuables out of sight or in the trunk, be sure to lock your vehicle and ensure all windows are rolled up.  The majority of the thefts from vehicles that are reported to LPD are a result of a thief getting into an unlocked vehicle.  Often times they steal items you may not think are enticing.  Most thefts are of coins, and other small items.  Locking your vehicle makes yours the harder target.  You should also park your vehicle in well lit areas if you are leaving it overnight.

TAKE:
The best thing to do with your valuables is to take them with you.  If you are making purchases at a retail location, and plan to make expensive purchases, make them your last stop.  Do not buy your most expensive items, place them in your car, and then return for more shopping.  You may return to your vehicle to find your best deal has just become your worst deal.  When you park your car at home, take your electronics inside with you.  Leaving them in your car is just an invitation for trouble.

If you follow these basic safety precautions, you could prevent a very expensive holiday.  You are also helping the Lima Police Department by reducing thefts from vehicles.
